The kids and I decided to travel to Turkey to visit Pat three days after mom left.  We had talked about taking a family vacation to Malta once he returned home, but decided our August was already jam packed.  We flew into Istanbul and spent the weekend there before heading to Izmir.  The kids were so excited to see their daddy after being away for a couple of months!

Istanbul was extremely busy due to the end of Ramadan holiday. The Blue Mosque is the second largest mosque in the world, and there were many visitors vacationing from other Muslim countries.  I was stunned how filthy the city was.  People would finish their bottled water, or whatever they were eating and throw their garbage on the ground. I do think this was partly due to the large amount of tourists that weekend. I have heard from friends who have also visited that it was much cleaner.  I will say I saw many city workers trying to pick up the trash from the street.  Pat had a colleague stationed in Istanbul, and we met with them a couple of nights for dinner and walking around the city.

Our favorite part of Istanbul was the Hagia Sophia.  This was the Vatican of the Constantinople period.  While there is a grueling history, I was amazed with the beauty and intricate detail of the church/mosque/museum.  Before we headed to Izmir we stopped to see the Medusa columns in the cisterns.  This giant ancient underground water tank supplied the city during all those long sieges.  It was also a nice break from the 110 degree weather outside!

Pat, the kids, and I hopped on a flight from Istanbul to his apartment in Izmir.  He found a great place in the middle of the city.  What a different feeling from Istanbul. Izmir is lively, but not crowded.  We saw our first protest within hours of landing. We weren't sure what it was about, but were impressed the police to demonstrator ratio.  While Pat worked, the kids and I spent our days at the Nato pool. This was possibly the nicest spot in the entire city, and we spent 4-5 hours a day swimming. Unsurprisingly, Elly made a friend and they were inseparable!

Our last weekend was spend on the Island of Chios in Greece.  It was a nice, relaxing weekend, but the effects of the debt crisis were pretty apparent. It seemed like we were the only ones on the island.  There was a big fat Greek wedding at the hotel which carried on until the wee hours of the morning.

Overall we had a great trip! The kids and I left two days before Pat returned home to prepare for our 13 day Baltic States trip! Enjoy the photos!

Uncovered after centuries behind plaster. :(

Tile mosaics that had to be carefully restored.  Undoubtedly there will be pieces missing.  They began removing the plaster in 1934.  There are still some completely covered.

What a history lesson for them!

Galata Tower (Or maybe Rapunzel if you ask Elly!)

We found a Krispy Kreme so we had to have a treat.

Pat left for Izmir, Turkey shortly after we moved to Germany.  He had a great opportunity to work with NATO for a few months.  The kids and I didn't joint him since school still being in session, and we hadn't received our household goods yet.  I knew we needed to get ourselves settled before we traveled anymore.  We were having a difficult time adjusting to a new place, and needed to get it together!  I won't bore you with the details, but will say it helped tremendously to get our belongings. Something else that helped our transition was my amazing mother!  She made the exhausting journey from Gahanna, Ohio to Garmisch, Germany towards the end of June.  We were all so thankful to see Grammi-Gram!  We gave her a few days to get over the jet lag, then began traveling all around Bavaria!

She was here for a little over two weeks, and we traveled about everyday!  We decided to head to Stuttgart to use as a hub for travel.  Mom wanted to check out Rothenberg, and we intended on a trip to Strasbourg, France.  In true mother/daughter fashion we stumbled upon outlets and decided to give them a little bit of our money.  We will try for Strasbourg next time.  Back at the hotel in Stuttgart Kellan discovered the Big Ten Network and he enjoyed every classic game!  He begged me to go back during the OSU season to catch a game or two.

Rothenberg is a beautiful walled city, and we loved exploring the city center. We went into four of the five Kathe Wolfahrt shops, and am now ready to decorate my house, and four more for Christmas!  The only downside to our big Stuttgart/outlet/Rothenberg trip was the extreme heat.  It was 100-105 degrees each day, and most of the shops didn't have air conditioning.  It certainly made for early days.

We headed back to Garmisch, and took off for a day trip to Innsbruck, Austria.  It was too hot to stick around Garmisch with no air,  scaffolding around our building, and plastic over the windows.   We explored the Swarovski museum and discovered a four story play area for the kids.  It was a pint sized version of an American Ninja Warrior course according to the kids!

We made day trips to Munich, Salzburg, and Mittenwald before we sent her home exhausted, and in desperate need of a two week siesta!  The kids both insisted on showing her where they play their sports, and truly enjoyed having Grammi-Gram around.  Enjoy the pictures!
